TBH GOES TO COLLEGE AT 14

In June 2008, TBH spent a week at St. Mary's College in ST. Mary's MD.

The 5 day college experience was part of an Youth Leadership Conference sponsored by SMECO (Southern Maryland Electric Co-Op).

Mrs.Bernadette Lewis was the head coordinator of this program that has been in existence for some years now.

In January, High school students in Southern Maryland, grades 9-12, can visit their counselors to pick up an application packet or they can contact Mrs. Bernadette Lewis at (301) 751-0243.

Youth from all over Southern Maryland High Schools, were selected based on grades and recommendations by teachers and community leaders as well as an essay about "why they should be chosen to attend the Youth Leadership Conference."

The chosen youth spent 5 days experiencing the college life. The youth were assigned to dorm rooms with roommates, given meal tickets for their meals, provided keys for their rooms. The youth also had to bring all the necessities that college students bring i.e, personal items, sheets, blankets, pillows etc.

They attended workshops daily with such noted speakers as Ed Gerety and Domique Dawes, The worlds famous US gymnist.

The workshops also ended with q & a periods. The youth were able to come together and collectively speak about the speakers topics.

During down time, the youth took time to meet other youth, rock climb, swim, and play basketball.

One parent replied," This is just a great opportunity for these kids. It gives them a chance to see what college life away from home is like while also instilling in them some responsibility. They can't call mommy to make them get up and get to their class on time. Now they have total control. I must admit I cried like a baby when we had to leave. I couldn't believe I was leaving my baby at college. Now I truly have to value the 2 years we have left before they "really" go off."

All the students we spoke with said, they had a great time and look forward to coming back next year. They also mentioned they would start letting more of their friends know about the opportunity and the experience.

TBH, said the experience was great. They got to meet new friends, experience college life, and hear great speakers. Their only regret is; they wished it was longer. They are truly looking forward to next year to experience the Youth Leadership Conference again.
